BT Network Switch Off

Your BT Network Switch Off Update

Everything you need to know about the BT network switch off, PSTN withdrawal and the migration to cloud telephony services.

In 2025, BT will be switching off the PSTN and ISDN networks.

BT are moving all their customers from the old analogue public switched telephone network (PSTN) to a fully IP network.

This is a full removal of traditional copper-based services from within telephone exchanges and then closing the exchange down. This will not only affect all PSTN & ISDN based technologies but also copper-based Broadband solutions such as ADSL and FTTC. This means that legacy products will be withdrawn from service and ceased.

Our cloud telephony experts can help advise on the best IP based systems for your business and work with you to formalise a clear migration plan.

How will this affect your business?

Any business that currently has a BT Analogue or ISDN line will be effected, as these services will cease in 2025.

Initial Exchange Withdrawal Dates have been confirmed by BT Openreach from as early as 2024 for a number of areas.  There will then be a rolling withdrawal of exchanges and ceasing of services across all areas through 2025.

Analogue and ISDN lines are generally used for the following business services:

  • Phone systems
  • Internet services
  • Alarm lines
  • PDQ machines
  • Fax machines

PSTN and ISDN switch off

Is IP better than PSTN?

Yes. Technology has moved forward and the PSTN network is increasingly out of kilter with the demands of modern communications.

As businesses switch to mobile and internet communications, everyone demands much more than the traditional technologies were designed to deliver.

In a move away from on premise systems, IP telephone solutions for businesses take the hardware out of your office, replacing it with an online communications platform.

From video conferencing and instant messaging to full call centre functionality, cloud telephony is designed to improve the efficiency of your business.
