Coming to your home and business, full fibre broadband!
Openreach is Britain’s national broadband infrastructure provider. It has recently announced an acceleration of its Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) build programme. FTTP is often referred to as ‘super-fast broadband’ or ‘next-generation broadband’ as it offers faster speeds than have been available to date using older generation networks.
Currently, about 500,000 premises have full-fibre connections on the Openreach network. Now, the aim is to extend the current FTTP programme in order to reach three million homes and businesses by the end of 2020 with it’s “Fibre First” programme.
Eight cities have been chosen to in the first phase of the programme, which are Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and our home town of Bristol. Openreach will also continue to focus on delivering FTTP to rural areas, in partnership with the Government, to make sure some of the hardest to reach communities in the UK get access to future-proofed, FTTP networks.
An FTTP network has substantial benefits for UK citizens, businesses, society and the economy. The benefits include better, more reliable service, fewer faults and faster, more predictable and consistent speeds. The platform would support the speed requirements of customers for decades to come.
Reaching three million premises by 2020 is just the start, the ambition is to build a FTTP footprint of ten million FTTP footprint by the mid-2020’s.
Clive Selley, Chief Executive of Openreach, said: “Through the Fibre First programme, Openreach is getting on with the job of building an Ultrafast Britain.
Working closely with Central and Local government and our Communication Provider customers, we will identify the cities, towns and rural areas where we can build a future-proofed, FTTP network that’s capable of delivering gigabit speeds to all homes and businesses at an affordable cost”.
This is incredibly exciting news for the comms industry and shows the commitment of Central Government to make Britain a world leading business economy.
